Murrumba Downs & Surrounding Districts Mums

Murrumba Downs & Surrounding Districts Mums is a place where mothers from suburbs on Brisbane’s Northside (including, but not limited to Kallangur, Petrie, Narangba, Bray Park, Deception Bay, North Lakes and Caboolture) can come together; create connections with other mums whilst making lifelong friendships for themselves and their children. We have regular meets, a facebook discussion group, Mums nights & much, much more!!

The name Murrumba was derived from the local Aboriginal dialect and means Good place. And that is exactly what it is for us Mums. Murrumba Downs & Surrounding Districts Mums (also known as ‘Murrumba Mums’) is such a Good place because it is a supportive facebook community wherein we can feel safe to share our experiences honestly and openly but more than that it’s a wonderful Mother’s group that, like other Mother’s groups or playgroups, will meet once a week, but furthermore have other fun outings and activities. So we get the best of both worlds – fun meetups and can stay connected on a daily basis through the facebook platform.

It’s also a Good place for our children. They’re getting to interact with other families that we’re not just seeing once a week and barely speak to – we’re making meaningful friendships and creating a wonderful network for them to gain confidence and social skills from.

Most importantly this is a Good place for ALL Mums. We’re not a clicky group – we want all Mums to feel welcome, whether you’re a new Mum or new to the area or just need to make new friends. Mums of all different backgrounds are encouraged to join us, even the Mr Mums – it is our differences that add to the vibrancy of our group.

Being a parent is such a rewarding experience, but it can certainly be a challenge as well. When I became a mother I started feeling lonely and isolated and I wondered how many other mothers felt the same. This is one of the driving factors behind creating this group – no one should ever feel alone; like they have no one to talk to, or that they do not have any support because there always is…

Our aim is to bring the community together; to make new friendships and to support one another. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us now

QLD FIFO Network for families in Brisbane

a new social networking group

With the increase in FIFO or DIDO workplaces around Australia, but specifically for our QLD Mum’s and Dad’s it has created a new breed of “single” parents.  Spurred on by a discussion on another mothers group site, Mel Jones decided to make a group on Facebook specifically for QLD FIFO (and DIDO) Families.

Our aim is to link families in the same situation through the power of Social Media.  We hear about the support groups formed by Defence Force Families, and community groups for singles etc, so the QLD FIFO Network is a great way to meet other parents in the same situations who can understand our unique issues the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle presents.

QLD FIFO Network is a casual network via Facebook to discuss all things family, kid or random issues with other FIFO/DIDO families as well as around formal and informal meet ups in local areas.  We are always looking for new members to join our group so find us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/576287582396928/

What they don’t tell you about playgroup

Parents, carers and their children gathered all over Australia last week, to celebrate National Playgroup Week.

In Brisbane, families with children from birth to five years connected at the World’s Biggest Playgroup Day at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for a free concert by Play School personality Jay Laga’aia.

If you’ve ever wondered what you can expect from a local playgroup, read on as four Brisbane mums share their experiences…

According to Playgroup Australia Chair, Pam Cahir, playgroups began to flourish in the 1970s, and today, there are over 8000 community playgroups that meet each week, with more than 200,000 parents who participate.

Connecting with other families

Playgroup is all about new experiences!

Playgroup is all about new experiences!

“Parents opt into a community playgroup for a range of reasons,” Pam explains. It might be the opportunity for their child to play with other children, or support for their parenting. It might also be simply the desire to be and talk with other parents.”

Brisbane mum of three, Lisa, agrees. “The best part of going along to playgroup is getting the opportunity to speak to other adults and compare notes about what they do with their kids for recreation, in times of sickness, and sharing ideas for the best toys, outings, recipes, and schools,” she says.

Being part of a community

Pam, from Playgroup Australia, says another benefit of participating in playgroup is the sense of community it promotes for parents, carers and their children.

“The sense of community that results from participation in a playgroup promotes feelings of belonging and connectedness,” Pam explains. “Such feelings have been shown to have a positive effect on children’s and families’ mental health.

“Research indicates that a child’s sense of belonging is a key protective factor that promotes wellbeing, as well as learning outcomes. Children who have a sense of belonging and connectedness have been found to feel happier and safer, and are more able to cope with the ups and downs of life than children whose sense of belonging and connectedness is low. The same is the case for adults.”

playgroup brisbane

Practical benefits for children

In addition to these philosophical reasons for being involved in playgroup, Brisbane mother of three, Rebekah, says there’s some practical benefits for children too.

“Playgroup gives children an opportunity for social interaction, which helps them develop their social skills in preparation for school,” she says. “It also exposes them to positive and negative behaviours, and even exposes them to germs which builds their immune system.”

Finding a playgroup that’s right for your family

Playgroups come in all shapes and sizes. Many playgroups are run by churches or community organisations and they often incorporate craft, music, morning tea and other activities into their programs. There are playgroups especially for fathers, ethnic groups, children with disabilities and even for grandparents.

The downside to community playgroups is that they can be large, and it is easy to get lost in the crowd and not connect with anyone. Brisbane mother of two, Michelle, says it doesn’t have to be this way – playgroup can be as simple as a small group of mums meeting regularly in each other’s houses.

“Playgroups don’t have to be large groups of random mum and kids where you just smile at the odd person and if you’re lucky have a bit of small talk,” she says. “They can be more intimate gatherings where you can really connect with a few good friends.”

Michelle says that in addition to forging and nurturing friendships with other mums, playgroup fills a gap in what can be a long week of caring for little ones.

“Playgroup gives us something to look forward to each week, and a morning where I don’t have to decide what I’m going to do to entertain the kids,” she says.

“It’s a low cost and a low-stress activity that gets us out of the house, and it’s an excuse to venture out to places I might not otherwise on my own with the kids.”

What they don’t tell you about playgroup

Not everyone has a positive playgroup experience, and you may need to try more than one to find a group that’s a good fit for you and your child. Sometimes, parents can be competitive, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your child’s milestones with others in the group. Remember, every child is different, and there is a wide range of what’s “normal” when it comes to babies and children. Try to be sensitive to others who may be finding parenting difficult, and be a good listener.

It is also possible to have the opposite experience, and you just may meet a group of supportive mothers that will become friends for life.

Brisbane mother of two, Anne, says that seeing other families at playgroup going through the same things as her family gave her the reassurance she needed as a parent.

“The best thing I learnt at playgroup is that everything is normal!” she says. “If you are experiencing something new, be it wonderful or difficult, chances are someone else is as well. Even if we couldn’t fix it, it was comforting to know that we weren’t alone.”

Networks for Nannies in Brisbane

$

Being a nanny or au pair can be amazingly fulfilling and rewarding, nurturing little ones, helping them to learn and develop and enjoying lots of special moments with them. Yet it can also be quite a lonely career, without the camaraderie of working alongside colleagues. For many nannies and au pairs, the initial period of work can leave you feeling quite isolated and craving some adult company and companionship. For those working in Brisbane, the great news is that there are plenty of opportunities here for nannies and au pairs who want to build a network of like-minded people for kids’ playdates and adults’ catch-ups. We’ve rounded up the best ways for you to make friends in Brisbane!

Join a network group

One of the best ways to make friends with others is to join a network group. Brisbane and Gold Coast Nanny Network is a great group to join to make new friends and arrange playdates. The Miss Poppins Nanny & Babysitting Agency organises a social event every month for nannies to meet up and connect, and to form relationships with other local nannies and organise playdates. Both groups love welcoming new nannies. You can also find other groups simply by searching Facebook for Brisbane nannies.

For au pairs, there are also many Facebook groups for au pairs in Brisbane to connect with each other. Au Pair World Brisbane and Surrounds is a group for Brisbane au pairs to meet, make friends and organise travels. Au Pair in Brisbane 2015 is a group for all 2015 au pairs to make friends, socialise and find travel partners. There are many others out there too!

Join a social group

There are also many other services for connecting people that aren’t specifically nanny or au pair orientated. For example, Meetup is a great site to find groups of like-minded people. The JOY Project in Brisbane is run to bring more joy to people who have moved here and are adjusting to a new life and settling in. It’s free to join, it’s for anyone and they meet for regular social events. Find out more here. There is also Playdate Australia, where you can find people who live nearby with similar aged children and interests to set up playdates or join mothers’ group or playgroup.

Visit a park

Visiting one of Brisbane’s awesome parks is not only fun for the kids, it is also a great opportunity to meet other people. Having the confidence to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger can be hard to muster, but remember that they’re probably in the same boat as you and would much prefer to watch over the kids with a little company and nice conversation than be alone. For an easy conversation starter, you can simply say something like, ‘Hey Johnny is really enjoying playing with your child. Would you like to meet up for a playdate next Tuesday at such and such a park?’ Oh and to make it even easier for you, we have mapped all of the best playgrounds in Brisbane right here for you on Brisbane Kids!

Join a playgroup

Joining a playgroup is a great way to let the kids play with others in a safe and fun environment and to meet new people. Check out Playgroups in Brisbane for a complete list of playgroups that are looking for new members!

Go to the library

Libraries in Brisbane are awesome! They often have dedicated children’s areas and run many regular kids’ activities for babies, toddlers and older children. Whether you go to an event or just to read some books together and do some colouring, you will often find many others doing the same with their little ones and looking for friendship. Simply click here to find a library near you!

The thing to remember is you are not alone! Everyone needs a friend and luckily in Brisbane there are plenty of ways to find them. The best advice is get out there and be confident in yourself!
